Getting to know Ellie-kay Dawe, Environmental Consultant

What was your background before joining Aqua Consultants?
Before joining Aqua Consultants, I studied geology and physical geography at Keele University, where I developed a strong foundation in environmental science. I set up my own community interest company (CIC) focused on improving local biodiversity through initiatives like creating wildflower meadows, orchards, and hedgehog conservation projects.
After university, I worked as an environmental scientist at a consultancy, specialising in nutrient neutrality, water quality, discharge permits, and nature-based solutions. This involved delivery of projects for regulators, water companies, private developers, renewable energy, and transport organisations. This experience equipped me with a deep understanding of addressing environmental challenges and delivering environmental assessments.
What do you do at Aqua Consultants?
I work as an Environmental Consultant within the environment team, which is part of the advisory team.
I focus on supporting clients and providing innovative solutions to water resources and environmental topics. I'm currently leading projects like the Local Resource Option studies for the Environment Agency, exploring sustainable water resource options for farms.
I have worked for a range of water companies on environmental support and data analysis, including being seconded onto a storm overflow task force. I'm also involved in a nature-based solutions gap analysis project for a water company.
What excites you about coming to work?
I'm excited by the collaborative and innovative environment. Working on impactful projects that address sustainability and environmental challenges is incredibly fulfilling. The opportunity to make a real difference while learning from a supportive and driven team motivates me every day.
The team is incredibly supportive, and the company's commitment to personal development has been a key motivator, offering continuous learning opportunities. They have also supported me in applying for the Institute of Water Rising Star programme and encouraged me to take on speaking opportunities at conferences and webinars.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I volunteer as a leader for my local Scout troop, where I contribute to mentoring and supporting young members.
Recently, I’ve taken up ballet and even performed in a summer ballet show.
I love going on camping trips with my partner and dog in our campervan, exploring the outdoors. My passion for geology remains strong, and I often search for interesting rocks on my outdoor adventures.
Additionally, I participate in Toad Patrol, assisting with toad migration during spring, which supports local conservation efforts.
What are you looking forward to over the next 12 months?
In the next 12 months, I am really looking forward to upcoming work opportunities around nature-based solutions and water resources.
I’m also looking forward to expanding my industry network and skills, particularly from being selected as an Institute of Water Rising Star for 2025. This programme will allow me to organise impactful events and collaborate with experts across the water sector, all of which has been supported by Aqua Consultants.
What is the biggest challenge you see in the environmental sector in the next 10 years?
One of the biggest challenges in the environmental sector over the next decade is the need for rapid adaptation to climate change, regulatory changes, ageing infrastructure, and a growing population, all while ensuring sustainable resource management.
The increasing demand for water, combined with the pressures of population growth and the need to protect the environment, will require innovative solutions like catchment nature-based solutions, improved infrastructure, and integrated policies.
Additionally, addressing biodiversity loss and promoting sustainable land-use practices will be critical in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
